Blue Cross Blue Shield Name Change

04.02.12

Florida Blue –New Name of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Changes mark a new era, expanded focus for Florida’s health leader

Florida Blue –New Name of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Changes mark a new era, expanded focus for Florida’s health leader

Jacksonville, Fla. – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) is now Florida Blue. The new name, new logo and tagline – ‘In the pursuit of health’ – are all part of the company’s transition to a health solutions company with an overarching mission to help the people of Florida and their communities achieve better health. Consumers will soon see the new Florida Blue brand utilized in signage, sponsorships and advertising.

The brand transition reflects a host of initiatives inspired by Florida Blue’s expanded mission, including: a focus on affordable products; the introduction of new health plans and services; the personalization of health care services and customer support through the company’s unique Florida Blue retail centers; an expanding suite of online tools to empower healthcare consumers and even stronger state-wide outreach to support Florida communities in their quest for better health. All of these programs and services support the company’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable health solutions to all Floridians.

“Florida Blue’s new name reflects the personal service and commitment to our members practiced by BCBSF for nearly 70 years,” said Pat Geraghty, chairman and CEO. “Our new name is notable, more memorable, and represents a familiar, trusted face that stands apart from the industry in meeting consumer needs. As Florida Blue, we will strengthen our market-leading reputation and solidify our role as Florida’s leading health solutions company.”

Introducing the new Florida Blue name marks a new era for the company – moving from a one-dimensional business model focused primarily on health insurance to a multi-dimensional health solutions company with a more comprehensive approach to health. Florida Blue is committed to helping all Floridians get the most value out of their health care dollar, providing personal health care support and building health-minded communities.

“The pace of change in the health care landscape is translating to increasing responsibility for the consumer,” said Mark S. Lee, vice president, brand development and marketing communications. “The Florida Blue name is more consumer-friendly -- shorter and simpler – and the company behind it is more focused on understanding the consumer, how they live and what they really need in terms of their health and well-being. The name change demonstrates our commitment in helping all members feel more comfortable regarding health care solutions.”

While the brand name has changed to Florida Blue, the company’s legal name remains Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc.

About Florida Blue
Florida Blue is a leader in Florida’s health industry. Since 1944, our members have counted on us to continuously develop better solutions that promote more affordable health care across the state. Our mission is central to all that we do. The WOCC - Your Business Advocate

02.03.12

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce Advocates on behalf of our Membership.

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, in keeping with our purpose and vision, has been very busy for the past few months and I’m very excited to tell you all about it.

At the November 2011 Board Meeting, the board voted to support and advocate in favor of the Property Tax Abatement Referendum that will be on the January 31st Preferential Presidential Primary ballot in Orange County and to pass a resolution of support for closing the statewide Internet Sales Tax Loophole. The Property Tax Abatement Referendum, if approved, will allow Orange County Board of County Commissioners to adopt ordinances enacting economic development tax exemptions for qualified businesses. Businesses must meet certain criteria to qualify. The most important criteria, creating 10 or more new full-time jobs with higher wages than the area average. These tax exemptions would be for new or expanding businesses and will only apply to county taxes. The Chamber plans to educate and promote to our members and the general public on the importance of voting YES on this referendum and how it will truly help to create jobs in Orange County.

Closing the Internet Sales Tax Loophole is an issue gaining lots of momentum throughout the state. The West Orange Chamber of Commerce is joining forces with The Florida Chamber, Associated Industries of Florida and My Main Street Florida in closing this loophole. When a Floridian purchases from a seller located outside of Florida, the remote seller does not have to collect the sales and use tax at the time of the transaction, although the tax is still legally owed to the state by the Floridian. However, few Florida residents know that they are required to pay the sales tax owed on remotely conducted transactions directly to the Florida Department of Revenue, and even fewer actually make such payments. This situation is costing the state and local governments hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars in lost tax revenue.

The WOCC knows that the Internet Sales Tax Loophole prohibits small businesses, which are required to charge sales tax, from competing on a level playing field against internet-only retailers who are not required to charge sales tax. The WOCC intends be an advocate for our members and to educate them and the general public that a sale is a sale, whether it is made online or on Main Street and that sales tax should be charged and paid. For more information about this issue, please visit:http://mymainstreetflorida.com/

At the January 201 WOCC Board Meeting, the board adopted a 2012 Legislative Position Paper that was drafted by the Economic and Governmental Advocacy Committee. This document will enable to the Chamber to communicate our views on key issues that are being addressed during this legislative session. At the same meeting the board also passed a resolution opposing the expansion of gambling/gaming in Florida. The Legislative Position Paper, the Gambling Resolution and the Internet Sales Tax Loophole Resolution will be sent to the Central Florida Delegation, and other legislators who sit on the various committees as these issues progress through the legislative process.

This morning, the West Orange Chamber of Commerce (WOCC) held an emergency board meeting. . The meeting was called so the Chamber Board of Directors could examine the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s proposal to allow the growth of hydrilla in Lake Apopka. After discussion, the WOCC Board of Directors unanimously voted to join the Friends of Lake Apopka on strongly opposing any decision regarding hydrilla management other than complete eradication in Lake Apopka. The Chamber Board thinks that the proposed growth of hydrilla in Lake Apopka could reverse the successful restoration efforts of the lake to date and negatively impact the businesses in West Orange County. The West Orange Chamber joins many other prominent organizations in opposing this action. The afore mentioned Friends of Lake Apopka, The Town of Oakland, The City of Winter Garden, the West Orange Political Alliance, The Orange Audubon Society and the Orange County Environmental Protection Division have all opposed the proposal to allow the growth of hydrilla in Lake Apopka.

Tonight, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a called a public meeting at 6:00 pm in Tanner Hall (29 W. Garden Ave.) in Winter Garden to “hear from the stakeholders”. The WOCC will be in attendance to present its opposition to the proposal to allow the growth of hydrilla in Lake Apopka. The WOCC urges you to attend and let the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission know that this proposal is detrimental to Lake Apopka or our West Orange community.

At times throughout the next couple of months, we may ask for your help in moving something forward or opposing forward movement of an issue. We will send out emails directing you with the best way to support us on our issues. If you have any questions, please contact Krista or Stina at the West Orange Chamber office. To learn more about the West Orange Chamber’s role as the leading business advocate in Central Florida please attend one of our Economic & Governmental Advocacy Committee meetings. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 27th, 8:00 am at the Chamber office. At the meeting, a representative from Boyd Development has been invited to speak and present a study of economic impacts for job creation and tax revenues into the economy for Citrus Lakes, a 600 acre project in the Horizon West Town Center. If you can attend, please register your attendance to Krista at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

WOCC Members Get Free Workshop on Goal Setting and Planning for Next Year

WOCC Members Get Free Workshop on Goal Setting and Planning for Next Year

As Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland said “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.” WOCC Member, Peggy Isaacson of HR On Call guided fellow member attendees through the latest Chamber Lunch and Learn to help members get on the right track for 2012.

“If you want to get to where you want to go in the next year, it’s going to take more than time management and to-do lists” said Isaacson. “Goal setting and planning draw the road maps for what you want to achieve.”

This fast paced session was held in the Chamber board room and allowed WOCC members a chance to learn how to wrap their goals around what is most important to them in their business and personal life. They also learned about envisioning their destinations so that they can plan the appropriate steps for getting there. Peggy also explained the concept of SMART goals and how to write them effectively.

Perhaps, the most important piece of info chamber members left with was how to get from goal to action plan along with the best way to overcome the obstacles that you may face along the way.

The WOCC is actively searching for innovative businesses whose dynamic approach to commerce deserves special recognition. We are seeking out a member business which has enhanced the business climate within West Orange. This select member business will have demonstrated leadership in the community by participating in Chamber activities and engaging in the salient issues of the West Orange community in 2010.

“This is an exciting change to our annual awards program”, said Stina D’Uva President/CEO WOCC. “We are looking forward to receive the nominations and then to be able to recognize a business that truly exemplifies the unique criterion that makes them Business Member of the Year”.

The nominee must be a Member in good standing of the West Orange Chamber of Commerce for a minimum of one year. If you believe you know of a business that fits the aforementioned criteria, a client, a customer, even your own company, please complete the Nomination Form below. It’s easy to do and will just take a moment of your time and must be returned to the Chamber no later than Monday, January 17, 2011.

All nominees for Business Member of the Year will be invited to participate in the Big Orange Awards, The WOCC Annual Awards Reception and at that time, they will be officially recognized for their nomination followed by the announcement of the winning business.

The West Orange community is growing and evolving everyday. The West Orange Chamber is dedicated to showcasing the integrity and professional interests of our members and is proud to represent our community.

West Orange Chamber Opposes Amendment 4

07.15.10

West Orange Chamber Opposes Amendment 4

The boards of the WOCC and W.O.P.A. had previously adopted resolutions to oppose the Hometown Democracy petition gathering initiative. However, due to the aid of paid petition gatherers, the initiative will be on the 2010 ballot. It will appear on the ballot as Amendment 4. If approved, this amendment will have Floridians “voting for everything” including issues of land use, stifling the process and bring development to a standstill which is much needed at this time. To see an informative video on the opposition of Amendment 4, please click here. For more information on the opposition of Amendment 4, please visit http://www.florida2010.org.

WOCC and W.O.P.A have a clear understanding of the importance of smart growth for our state and our region. Therefore, based on this knowledge, both organizations are lending their names and support to the growing list of Floridians that oppose Amendment 4.

“The WOCC and W.O.P.A. will work together closely to educate our members and residents of West Orange on why a “NO” vote on Amendment 4 is crucial to the economic growth of our region and state”, said Stina D’Uva, WOCC President and W.O.P.A. Ex-officio member. “The passage of this amendment would only worsen and likely never allow us to recover from the current economic crisis.”

The West Orange community is growing and evolving everyday. The West Orange Chamber is dedicated to showcasing the integrity and professional interests of our members and is proud to represent our community at both the local and state levels.

The West Orange Political Alliance is a non-profit, non-partisan organization formed in December 1997 to provide an active political voice in the interests of West Orange County. WOPA is governed by a set of by-laws approved by Florida’s Division of Elections.
