After years of neglect, Lake Apopka has begun a healing process. The West Orange Chamber of Commerce knew that restoring Lake Apopka would not only have ecological benefits, but would be a catalyst for business growth in our community. The Chamber's efforts fostered the creation of Friends of Lake Apopka.
In 2012, the WOCC unanimously voted to join FOLA, along with several other environmental groups and area municipalities, in strongly opposing a proposal to allow the growth of hydrilla in Lake Apopka, an action that could have reversed the successful restoration efforts of the lake and negatively impacted West Orange businesses.
The Chamber continues to support restoration efforts and increasing community awareness, and raising state funds for the ongoing process of improving Lake Apopka.
