School’s back in session and this is the perfect time to congratulate OCPS on earning an “A” grade for the entire system. OCPS strives to give the best education to all of its students and prides itself on being fiscally responsible with its $4 billion budget. In July, the Chamber board of directors, the Economic and Governmental Advocacy and 3D Committees and the board of the West Orange Political Alliance (WOPA) learned first-hand what revenue sources are available to OCPS for students and capital projects, as well as how the school siting policies work. This was the first of two meetings with OCPS, with the second one focusing on programs to assist students to make the right choice of career fields and paths to get them the jobs that fit them best.
The Chamber plans to use this information along with information gathered from UCF, Valencia College, and CareerSource Central Florida to learn all the resources available to employers and employees to help fill the talent or skills gap we are experiencing. WOPA will use all the information shared by OCPS to facilitate their candidate interviewing process in 2020’s election that will identify the right candidates to further education and talent development.
Developing and showcasing talent is important to a growing community like West Orange. This month, our Foundation is seeking applicants for Leadership West Orange. This is a great program that provides the class members with information on issues ranging from industry innovations, environment, culture and history. Next month, we will showcase three extraordinary women in different fields; OCPS Chairwoman Teresa Jacobs, Royetta Ginther, co-owner of Twistee Treat and Christine McGuirk, Chief Nursing Officer for Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital. You will want to attend Celebrating Extraordinary Women on September 18th to be inspired and learn valuable lessons from these accomplished women
Next month, we will also present some Spotlight Speakers which focus on areas of our strategic plan as well. The Chamber board is committed to fulfilling objectives from our strategic plan, especially on our objective of Identifying and Addressing Quality Workforce and the Talent Gap. Take a look at the full Strategic Plan.
Enjoy your Labor Day!!
