The Year of the Member Continues on - July 2019 Chairman’s Article

Now that we are beyond the midway point of my year as Chairman, I thought it would be a good time to review our performance in the year that our board determined as “the year of the member”.  Truly every year is about our members, yet with the focus on the building renovation in 2018, we wanted to make sure you know that providing services and programs to you is always our main focus of business.  With review of the strategic plan for this year, we appear to be on track in all areas and very specifically on our 3D Committee initiatives.

Our new 3D committee is focused on Business, Professional, and Workforce Development.   It was created to accomplish the following:

  • Investigate new ways to develop more business for our members
  • Create opportunities for professional development for both employees and employers
  • Finding, educating and developing the right employees to fill the jobs for the West Orange county workforce for today and tomorrow.

This committee has worked hard and added the Horizon West Wednesday Networking Group, sought ways to support our Dr. Phillips group which now meets on Thursdays at the YMCA.  This committee is also delivering professional growth opportunities through our Lunch and Learns focused on “the development of soft skills/emotional intelligence”.  This topic was identified as an area of interest through our chamber member survey.

The committee’s Health & Wellness Task Force convened and determined ways to support members within the Task Force focused industries, one of which will be revealed at our Celebrating Extraordinary Women’s event in September and through development of future programs scheduled for next year.  The Food & Beverage Task Force continued with its promise to move forward with “Dining Deals” which supports this industry during a slower time of year; summer.

The summer hasn’t slowed down on new member recruitment and our Ambassadors continue to provide the service of ribbon cuttings and anniversary celebrations.  To date, the Ambassadors have facilitated over 60 activities to support our members. Our Economic & Governmental Advocacy Committee completed its work to secure “doggie dining” for all of West Orange and is now reviewing the proposed one cent transportation tax by Mayor Demings.  All of this happens while the Events Department continues to deliver opportunities for networking, partnerships, collaborations and more.

I hope you will agree that we are delivering what is important to you.  The board and I always welcome your feedback.  And finally, when speaking of our board, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the retirement of our long serving board member Debbie Clements from Duke Energy.  I want to thank her for her longstanding service to our Chamber and the West Orange community.  Just because she has retired from Duke Energy doesn’t mean that Debbie has left our Chamber, she will continue to be an active member through her .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) business and as always, she will continue to serve her community.

Continue to Enjoy your Summer!
