For many families in the U.S., Thanksgiving means striking up the stove, cooking a turkey for hours on end, and setting the table for a day’s worth of plentiful feasting. But for one in seven Americans who struggle to put food on the table, celebrating the holiday isn’t as easy. Members of the West Orange Chamber have recognized this food insecurity issue for over a decade, and have worked hard to make a difference.
For over 15 years, members of the Chamber have donated their time and treasure to feed hundreds of families in West Orange County via a partnership with three local Community Centers, Lila Mitchell, Pine Hills and Maxey Community Centers. Throughout the years, volunteers have raised thousands of dollars to purchase and assemble baskets that contain everything one would need for a traditional Thanksgiving Dinner including a gift card to purchase a turkey or ham. Once the baskets are assembled, they are delivered to the Community Centers who then distribute them to the families in need.
This community outreach could not have been accomplished without the volunteers of the West Orange Chamber. Linda Osterberg of Mortgage Solutions has led the effort for many years. Via her leadership, many members, specifically the chamber networking groups and board of directors, have contributed to the cause. Chamber members Publix and WalMart have been instrumental in this program as well. We want to thank everyone who makes this project a reality; this year 90 families served. We appreciate your dedication to the West Orange Chamber and West Orange Community. Thank you!!
