Central Florida Pharmacy Council Releases 9th Edition African American Health Resource Directory
Orlando, Fla. (July 27, 2021) – The Central Florida Pharmacy Council (CFPC) is pleased to announce the release of its 9th edition of the African American Health Resource Directory. The directory is an important tool to help address health challenges and disparities by providing access to information on health care providers and resources available in the Central Florida community.
According to The Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the African American population is the least healthy ethnic group in the nation. Research has shown that there is conscious and unconscious bias and discrimination in the health care system that alters the experience and outcomes of care for people of color. Fear, lack of cultural understanding and access to quality health care and distrust of doctors are among the other contributing factors cited for people of color not receiving needed medical care.
“Black health care providers can play a critical role in eliminating these health disparities,” Dr. Angela Adams, executive director of CFPC, said. “CFPC is committed to providing a resource that connects the Black community with health professionals they can trust and who will respond to their health care needs.”
The Health Resource Directory is an easy-to-use reference that lists many Black health care providers in the Central Florida area. In addition to providing information about state and national health resources,
the directory has a comprehensive listing of churches, faith-based organizations, funeral homes and mortuary services, beauty salons, and barbershops located in the Black community.
The directory also includes information about mental health and wellness that addresses the hesitancy of African Americans seeking mental health services, as well as the need for African Americans to participate in research studies.
“Just as it is important in all other realms of life, representation matters and is essential in health care. It has a direct impact on improving health outcomes for communities of color,” said Tony Jenkins, Florida Blue market president. “We must make diverse providers accessible, and Florida Blue is proud to have partners like CFPC who are just as committed as we are to serving as a trusted advocate for medically underserved populations. For some, this directory will make a life-saving difference in how they seek health care.”
The directory is provided at No Cost to the community. It is supported by Florida Blue and Orange County Drug-Free Coalition. Directories are available at the following locations:
