Legislative Update
The West Orange Chamber is more than just events We are always focused on being your Voice regarding business issues and regulations. This year is no different. Currently, the state legislature is in session and there are several proposed bills that could affect you and your business. The WOCC is working on these items and wants you to be aware of exactly what we are doing for YOU.
COVID-19 Liability Protections (HB7 & SB72)
This West Orange Chamber supports this legislation that contains protections for business entities, religious institutions, educational institutions, governmental entities, and health care providers that substantially followed governmental health care and safety guidelines to protect against the spread of COVID-19. The bill provides protections retroactive to the start of the pandemic unless a lawsuit has already been filed and will provide protections for a year after the bill is signed by the Governor. We anticipate this legislation to be passed soon and will be sent to Governor Ron DeSantis, who has already indicated he will sign the bill. This legislation is very important to provide certainty for those that are doing their best to comply with changing guidance in response to a once-in-a-century pandemic.
Internet Sales Tax / Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund (HB 15 & SB 50)
For many years, the West Orange Chamber has advocated for closing the state loop hole on internet sales tax collection. This legislation modernizes Florida’s tax code and levels the playing field for main street businesses by allowing for the collection of sales tax from internet retailers. Florida and Missouri are the only two states in the country that have not adopted an economic nexus to collect online sales tax after the Wayfair Supreme Court decision. Additionally, HB 15 deposits money into the unemployment compensation trust fund over the next several years to avoid the automatic $713 million tax increase Florida employers were faced with this year and to help replenish the trust fund.
Florida Tourism Marketing (HB 675 & SB 778)
The West Orange Chamber is a proud supporter of Visit Florida. We know the value of marketing our various Tourism opportunities throughout Central Florida. Economic reports show that for every $1 in tourism marketing, the state receives a $2.15 return on investment. The funding and reauthorization of Visit Florida is extremely important, now, more than ever! We support SB 778 and HB 675.
