OAKLAND, FL — Oakland Avenue Charter School tested in the top four schools in Orange County on the 5th grade FCAT Science Sunshine State Standards test for the 2022-23 School Year. OACS students scored 91% proficiency, placing them fourth in Orange County following Orlando Gifted Academy (99%), Dommerich Elementary (94%), and Whispering Oak Elementary (93%).

The Charter School credits this success to dedicated, explicit, inquiry-based instruction, as well as their longstanding partnership with Oakland Nature Preserve. Students from Oakland Avenue Charter School frequently visit the Preserve for hands-on science education.

“I am so proud of our 5th graders and their hard work. Their tremendous accomplishment directly results from the quality science education that our teachers, Mrs. Carrie Sikes and Mrs. Mallory Guarino provide and our special relationship with Oakland Nature Preserve,” said Pamela Dwyer, Principal, Oakland Avenue Charter School.

Oakland Avenue Charter School’s weekly visits to the Nature Preserve allow students in all grade levels an exciting opportunity to learn about nature, the environment, and Central Florida’s ecosystem while completing lessons that meet the Florida Standards for grades K-5.
