Ocoee to be Proclaimed a “Purple Heart City”
OCOEE, Fla. – Mayor Rusty Johnson will proclaim the City of Ocoee a “Purple Heart City” at the City Commission Meeting on Tuesday, October 7. The meeting will be held at City Hall, 1 North Bluford Avenue, at 6:15 p.m. This effort serves as a show of support for military personnel, veterans, and families of those who have served in the Armed Forces. The city is proud to express its appreciation and honor those who have sacrificed for their country. As part of this initiative, the City of Ocoee will install Purple Heart City signs on several roadways.
The Purple Heart is a historic military award first established in 1782 by General George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit. The award is given to those who have been wounded or killed in combat with a declared enemy of the United States. Today, it remains the oldest military decoration still awarded to U.S. Armed Forces.
The designation is made in cooperation with Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 400. The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster goodwill among combat-wounded veterans and their families, promote patriotism, and support legislative initiatives that benefit veterans.
