On Saturday, August 14th, 2021 a 7.2 magnitude struck Haiti, heavily impacting the Souther Department, Nippes, and Grand’Anse. The earthquake’s epicenter measured approximately 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince. Experts from the U.S. Geological Survey say it is stronger in magnitude than Haiti’s earthquake in 2010, leaving hundreds of thousands dead or injured. Homes are destroyed, roads and ports are blocked, and bridges are down in the impacted area. Reports show the weakened infrastructure has limited telecommunications capability, making it harder for people to connect with their loved ones.
