September 26, 2022 – As we begin the fall season, there are many exciting days on the horizon that tremendously impact our community and businesses. Of course, one of those great moments is the start of the Orlando Magic 22-23 NBA season with our home opener at Amway Center on October 22nd! Putting my specific business milestone date aside, I wanted to focus this letter on the upcoming decision around the Orange County Transportation Tax, officially called the Charter County and Regional Transportation System Surtax.

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce and our board members have had many conversations over the last few months about the impact this could have on our community. As a board, we have supported voting yes for this initiative to pass when on the ballot this upcoming November.

With the ongoing growth of our region, I believe we have all experienced situations of which better infrastructure is greatly needed. I felt Orlando County Mayor Jerry Demings said it very well at the State of West Orange Luncheon the Chamber hosted on August 31st, when he asked all in the audience to raise their hands if they felt we needed improvements to our roadways, safer structure for pedestrians around our roadways, adding more bicycle lanes and so much more. Every hand in the room was raised. Then he asked the room if they would help in making sure we get the funding to make these improvements, urging everyone to vote in favor of the Charter County and Regional Transportation System Surtax.

I certainly believe these types of improvements create a positive impact for businesses in West Orange County. Better roadway systems increase access to our businesses. Helping us meet the demand of the growth we’re experiencing by widening several roadways will make it easier for us to get around the community. And beyond business impact, the increase of safety measures needed for pedestrians around our transportation infrastructure is needed.

I encourage everyone to visit  https://wochamber.com/west-orange-foundation/#News  and, https://wochamber.com/committee/economic-and-governmental-advocacy-committee/ as well as other resources on this topic, and really invest in the decision that will have an impact on our community for years to come.

Thank you!

Chairman, West Orange Chamber of Commerce Board
